Third grade students are full of questions, ready and willing to discover how the universe around us works. Experimentation will get your students enthusiastic and wanting to learn more. One great way to select a science fair experiment is to actually ask the kids themselves; unfortunately you will be inundated with suggestions, making it hard to choose.

Kids of this age are full of life and spirit and really want to learn, but they still do not have the ability to understand hard concepts. Therefore it is always a good idea to actually over simplify the topic in order to make sure no one looses interest. Measuring the different members of the class is a great idea for this age, plotting a bar chart and discovering who is the smallest, tallest and even who has the biggest feet.

Simple scientific experiments are great for third graders; allow the children to really take part and get dressed up to look like they are a real scientist. They can discover which fruits float and which ones sink, and even experiment to see if a shatterproof ruler really is as resistant as it claims to be.

Incubation of eggs is a wonderful science fair project, as is growing cress seedlings. Each child takes and plants a seedling, or alternatively writes their name on an egg and waits for it to incubate and hatch. Children will be fascinated to see who s cress grows first, who s grows the tallest, and under which conditions the seedling sprouts faster.

The most important issue to consider when you are working with this age group is the level of their scientific learning. The children have reached an age where they are absolutely fascinated by how everything around them works, yet their capability to understand complex scientific equations or concepts is still very limited.

Choosing a scientific topic for third grade students is easy and should be fun. Do not make the mistake of tediously preparing a project that will be unsuitably difficult for the kids. Run ideas through with the class first and let your students choose the subject that they will do, that way there will be no complaints form the kids, the parents, and most certainly not from the teacher in charge.
