What Is The Best Science Project For 2nd Graders

If you are a teacher of second grade and you have been set the task of finding out what the best science project for 2nd graders is then you may need some guidance.  Children of this age are of course far too young to really appreciate what a scientific concept is, and what you need to do is find something that will keep them motivated and interested whilst subconsciously teaching them a simple scientific concept.

Second grade students will have been taught some very simple scientific concepts and through a science fair or experiment they will be able to put some of what they learned into action. Second grade topics should essentially be fun, but they should have an underlying scientific basis. Even young children love to record down results and conclude what they think they have learned from an experiment.

When you are choosing the subject and equipment for your second year fair, you must remember that young children will associate scientific objects as foreign; always use familiar household items that they will be able to identify with.  There is absolutely no point in spending out large sums of money; the children will learn perfectly well from empty plastic bottles and toilet tubes.

It is very important that you have the whole project planned from start to finish and that you are clear of how long and exactly what should happen in each stage.   At this young age children will not show initiative or come up with their own ideas; you should guide them through the experiment stage by stage.

When you need to choose a topic for such a young age group, make sure that it is something that they will both understand as well as be familiar with; no complicated scientific processes are needed.  You require the children to watch and take part in each stage of your chosen subject, take notes, and at the end make conclusions from their findings.

A great topic for younger kids is one that is self explanatory and one that does not require reading.   Diagrams and bright pictures can give the kids step by step instructions as to what they are needed to do and the children should be happy and comfortable with what is expected of them.

Two favorite topics that fascinate young kids are why rainbows occur and why ice cream melts;   the number of topics for a second grade fair really is unlimited however.   When you need to find the best science project for 2nd graders, think back to when you were their age and try and remember what you liked and what you were taught; some of the best ideas after all are the oldest ones.
